2013 American Hero Dog

The American Humane Association held their 3rd Annual Hero Dog Awards this week, and a Pit Bull named Elle was named 2013 American Hero Dog. Elle is a therapy dog and along with her owner, Leah Brewer, teaches children to safely interact with dogs and visits retirement homes. The pair also created a reading program for elementary and middle school students called “Tail Wagging Tails,” and they travel to schools in North Carolina to help kids practice reading and gain confidence. Seven other dogs also received awards in different categories, including Hearing Dog and Search and Rescue Dog. The night was a fundraiser for the American Humane Association, and the awards were judged and presented by many dog-loving celebrities. You can watch the awards on the Hallmark Channel on October 30, and you can read more about the show here. Way to go, Elle!

Jim Buck, The First Professional Dog Walker

I recently stumbled across the obituary for Jim Buck, the first professional dog walker. He started walking dogs in New York in the early 1960s and died in June at the age of 81. I’m so lucky that he paved the way so I am able to work at job that I love. You can read his obituary in the New York Times here.
